What is the Difference Between Independent Living and Assisted Living?

March 23, 2017 | Blog

When searching for the most appropriate form of senior care for your loved one, there are many options to choose from, each designed to suit the unique needs and preferences of senior citizens and memory care patients alike. Two of the most common forms of senior care are independent living and assisted living. Though they are similar, there are intricate details of each that make it a unique form of care.

At Spring Hills, we are dedicated to helping you make the most appropriate decision for your loved one. Take a look at the unique differences between independent living and assisted living to discover which may be best suited for you and your family.

Adult Assisted Living

Assisted living communities are designed for seniors who are capable of leading independent lives, but who may no longer have the ability to care for themselves on a daily basis. Daily tasks, such as bathing and dressing, medication management, and meal preparation can become a challenge. Assisted living facilities, such as Spring Hills, allow seniors and their families to obtain a peace of mind, offering skilled caregivers that can assist in common household chores and activities. Dining, housekeeping, and laundry services are typically included as part of the residential package, as well as numerous social activities to stimulate both physical and mental health. Depending on the level of care offered by the facility, memory care services may also be included for those with dementia or Alzheimer’s. This is something we proudly offer at each of our senior living communities.

Independent Senior Living

In independent living situations, residents are able to successfully perform everyday tasks and typically prefer a bit more privacy. These individuals do not need ongoing assistance with meal planning, cleaning, or bathing, though many independent living communities do provide access to care and assistance when needed. Some independent retirement communities offer residents the option of purchasing a meal plan or housekeeping services if they choose not to perform these tasks themselves. However, independent living communities are more suited to those who are capable of residing on their own.

Making the Choice Between Assisted or Independent Living

When choosing between independent living and assisted living, it is important to take your loved one’s abilities and energy levels into consideration. You may also consider what their short-term future looks like. If they are physically fit and in good cognitive health, they may prefer an independent living community. However, if your loved one is unable to prepare meals or properly take daily medication, or if these tasks may be of concern in the near future, assisted living may be ideal. Though Spring Hills offers assisted living services, we create an environment that fosters independence, allowing our seniors to continue leading a satisfying life that they love.

When it comes time to assess the most appropriate living situation for your loved one, take an honest look at their health and well-being and that of the near future. We invite you to schedule a tour to see what our assisted living facilities have to offer, and remember to ask as many questions as you’d like!
