The Importance of a CMS Rating

August 17, 2021 | Blog

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) rating system gives nursing homes a rating between 1-5. Nursing homes with 5 stars are considered to have above average quality than ones with a 1 star rating. When finding a nursing home that is best for you or a family member, looking at the CMS rating can help you make the best decision for you. This rating system is important to us because it helps caregivers and families better assess a location they might want to go. The overall 5 Star rating system is made up of 3 categories:

Health Inspection Rating

The health inspection rating is calculated using the last 3 years of on-site inspections to include standard surveys, Covid surveys and complaint surveys to name a few. The health inspection rating is the foundation of the overall star rating with stars gained or lost from the other two categories.

Staffing Rating

The staffing rating comprises total RN, LPN and C.N.A. hours with RN hours weighted at 50%.

Quality Measure Rating

The Quality Measure rating is the different physical and clinical measures for nursing home residents. It is listed as Quality of Resident Care on the CMS site.

There are many reasons why these ratings are important to residential care. Like any field, a high rating is a great way to show how well your business is doing. For example, doctors and discharge planners discharge patients from hospitals and often use ratings as referral decisions. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development uses star ratings as a component of its risk assessment. Other lenders and institutional investors include 5-star ratings on their underwriting checklists. A nursing homes’ star rating can affect the ability to expand certificates that are of need. Insurers consider the ratings when setting up their networks, therefore impacting revenue.

At Spring Hills we try our hardest to give the best care we can. We are excited that our hard work has been paying off as 4 of our locations have received high star ratings. Our Livingston, Wayne View, and Matawan Post Acute locations have received an overall 5 Star rating, as well as our Woodbury location that has received an overall 4 Star rating.

These qualifications are to make sure all aspects of our care, facility, and business is running properly and we are taking all the right precautions and measures to have a safe and well run home for our residents. Based on the 3 qualifications we are able to receive an overall rating of 5 stars!

I am excited to showcase our team’s hard work, resulting in a 5 star rating. We are thrilled and can’t wait to continue our positive customer service experience.” Jesse Palma Regional Director of Business Development
