Spring Hills Senior Communities Leads a National Salute to Honor the Heroes of Healthcare in the Battle Against Coronavirus

April 17, 2020 | Blog, COVID-19, Partners

Edison, NJ (April 14, 2020) — As of April 12, 2020, New Jersey, one of the epicenters of the Coronavirus Pandemic, has a total of 61,850 positive cases across the state with 2,350, 45% of these of people are over age 80. Alexander Markowits, President/CEO of Spring Hills Senior Communities, is launching a community-wide salute to the Heroes of Healthcare, who are dedicated to caring for all those impacted by Coronavirus. He said, “These times are no different than when we send the military to fight a war, except now our soldiers are healthcare employees and their supportive staff. They are the real heroes of this war on the Coronavirus as are the family members who support them.”

Understanding the comparison to fighting for one’s country in war times, Jason Hutchens, Sr. VP of Operations for Atrium Post Acute Care, a Spring Hills Managed Facility, was a soldier in the Gulf War. He said, “Prior to earning my commission as a United States Army Infantry Officer, I served in Desert Shield and Desert Storm. I see so many similarities between the soldiers I fought with and the associates fighting this pandemic. In both cases, there is something more important than fear. It’s fighting the enemy in war, which is exactly what the healthcare workers are doing now.”

Markowits continued, “We are always appreciative of what the staff give to residents and patients at their communities, but when I spoke to a nurse in Woodbury who has left her children to fight this battle, I became even more aware of their sacrifices. This nurse has four kids who are being watched by their grandparents so she can care for the patients. She’s risking her life to help all these people in need.”

To help support the fight and assist the statewide effort to care for the increasing demand for beds in hospitals, Atrium Post Acute Care expanded its treatment of the positive cases of COVID-19 in two facilities, Woodbury and Livingston, NJ. Managed by Spring Hills Senior Communities, both units were strategically planned to minimize risk, keeping current patients safe. They have private rooms, private bathrooms, piped in oxygen, separate dedicated staff and PPE. While both buildings have a dedicated section or floor to COVID-19, they will convert the entire facility in Woodbury as the sub-acute patients become ready to be discharged. Both facilities are working directly with health officials and following all recommended guidelines.

Markowits referred back to the need to honor our healthcare heroes and he added, “As a symbol of strength of healthcare workers and to demonstrate our support for them, we have designed a logo, symbolizing hope, strength and faith. We are also asking people to wear and display blue ribbons as a daily reminder that healthcare professionals are truly heroes.”
