Relieve Stress With Aromatherapy

November 6, 2018 | Blog

The benefits of aromatherapy are built upon the growing number of clinical studies that highlight aromatherapy as an effective and holistic approach to overall wellness. The use of soothing scents of essential oils can greatly benefit those with feelings of stress, depression and anxiety as well as assist those with symptoms of dementia. Caring for someone with dementia can be very rewarding, but stressful at times. By understanding the benefits of aromatherapy, this very simple and holistic method can help reduce stress for both the caregiver and patient.

What is It?

Aromatherapy is a comprehensive treatment that uses plant extracts to alleviate issues with the body and promote a healthy lifestyle. The scents used during aromatherapy are often admitted through our sensory organs. As humans, we have five sensory organs: nose, ears, mouth, hands and eyes. Each of these sensory organs provide us with a way to perceive an external stimulus. The Alzheimer’s Association explains that aromatherapy, “promotes health and prevents imbalances on the physical, emotional and spiritual level.”

Aromatherapy for Seniors

How Does It Work?

It works by using our sense of smells and touch to absorb the nutrients of the essential oils. The essential oils are a product of scents and flavors extracted from plants. Aromatherapy can be delivered in many ways such as: massages, oils, candles, and baths. The aromas we smell during this therapeutic practice enter our noses and stimulate the limbic system of our brain. Some use a similar method to aromatherapy, where the essential oils are applied and are absorbed by the skin. There are various unique healing properties to each essential oil and can provide an abundance of benefits to anyone of any age. With this in mind, it is important to provide the option to use aromatherapy to help both caregivers and seniors combat feelings of depression and stress.

What Are The Benefits?

As aromatherapy becomes more relevant and recognized in the medical field, it is important to stay abreast of the latest trends in alternative care methods. According to Healthline, “ It has been estimated that 43% of people who have stress and anxiety use some form of alternative therapy to help with their condition.” The use of oils like peppermint, rosemary, jasmine and lavender have numerous benefits in memory care. These oils not only uplift seniors, but can also have a relaxing or sedating effect on the body. This could be extremely helpful in easing symptoms of anxiety, offering relief from symptoms of depression and improving the quality of life for people living with chronic health conditions.
