Offering Flexibility With Our Employees

September 9, 2020 | Blog, Videos

One of our company’s core codes of conduct is to respect other’s balance of work and personal life. This provides a true sense of value to our associates and we are proud to encourage a healthy work/life balance.

The mission of Spring Hills is to demonstrate “Caring with a Commitment to Quality,” by aspiring to the highest professional standards, while providing care and services in a nourishing, compassionate environment that supports the health and well-being of each of our residents.

Caring for our residents may be one of the most rewarding endeavors you have ever set out to accomplish.  It is a job that will demand the best of you: your understanding, patience and respect. We have opportunities across our continuum of care that can lead you on a path to success, even in a pandemic.

Flexibility & COVID-19

Certain jobs require employees to be physically present. However, we took the opportunity to examine policies to determine if we could better incorporate flexibility overall. COVID-19 caused us to reevaluate what it means to truly be flexible with our employees. Although caring for our residents and keeping them healthy is our number one priority, if our employees are not healthy and cared for, we are not doing our jobs.

Not until the pandemic did anyone realize how quickly everyday life could change. Even though healthcare has always been a 24/7 job, the ever-changing landscape of the pandemic made our job of maintaining healthy and safe communities even more demanding. With CDC guidelines and limitations, all of our employees went above and beyond to do their normal duties while also becoming the support system for many residents and their families. Meanwhile, they had their own fears, anxieties and families to take care of, not to mention caring for themselves.

Through our efforts, we have made changes to increase flexibility across the board. Those in our corporate offices were given the flexibility to work from home and those in our communities were given the opportunity to work shifts that fit their needs. With three different work shifts available it is our goal to match you with the best schedule possible to suit your life.

Knowing that our employees need to take care of their families, we are very understanding when they need to take time off and care for themselves and others. Through this experience, Spring Hills has continued to care for its employees by being more flexible and understanding when things come up in such an unpredictable time. Our goal is to “Respect and serve everyone” since “Respect builds integrity and trust” as stated on our code of conduct. Understanding these needs of our employees has allowed us to look to the future of providing our employees with flexibility and support so we can best care for our residents.

Work-Life Balance

It is incredibly important that our employees have a good balance in their lives. In fact, our code of conduct sates that we should “Respect other’s balance of work and personal life.” It is essential that our employees work yet also have the ability to step away and enjoy the lives they have created.  Studies show that having and maintaining a healthy work life balance helps to reduce stress and prevent employee burnout. No matter what kind of job you are looking for, Spring Hills offers a variety of opportunities so you can have a job that best suits your life and needs. These include:

  • Regular Full-Time Employee – An Employee who works a minimum of 32 hours per week during a continuous period. (Regular, overtime, vacation, sick, or holiday hours, if paid, will count.)
  • Regular Part-Time Employee – An Employee who works less than 32 hours per week during a continuous period.
  • Seasonal Employee – An Employee who is hired for a specific period of time (season) or for a specific project is considered seasonal. The definition of this category varies depending on the state.
  • Temporary Employee – An Employee who is hired for a specific period of time (on a full-time or part-time basis) such as summer help or for a specific project or assignment.
  • On-Call/Per Diem Employee – An Employee who works an irregular schedule on an as-needed basis.

Family Commitments

At Spring Hills, we know that family comes first. Life happens and things pop up. In our code of conduct, communication is defined to be “clear, concise and to the point.” We believe that constant and intentional communication is incredibly effective both amongst employees and from employees to residents and families. Whether you need to rush to get your kids at school or rush a family member to an appointment, we are here to help make sure you can take care of them.

Additionally, the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) ensures up to twelve weeks of unpaid leave under qualifying circumstances such as:

  • Birth and care of a newborn child.
  • Placement of a child with the Employee through adoption or foster care.
  • The care of a spouse, child, or parent who has a serious health condition.
  • A serious health condition that renders the Employee incapable of performing the functions of their job.
  • Call to active duty of a spouse, child, or parent.
  • The care for a service member (spouse, child, or parent or nearest blood relative) that was injured during active duty.

Second Jobs

Employees at Spring Hills are certainly able to have multiple jobs. Whatever you need to do to provide for yourself and your loved ones is very important to us. Working a second job is always permitted so long as it does not:

  • Adversely impact or interfere with one’s work at the Community.
  • Involve any use of Spring Hills’ equipment, supplies or facilities.
  • Imply the sponsorship or support of Spring Hills or affect the reputation of Spring Hills.

Any questions about outside employment can be discussed with your Supervisor. They will be there every step of the way to ensure you can manage your jobs and move you onto the best path. Never be afraid to communicate with them if there are any concerns. Open and honest communication is the best way to ensure everyone is happy and has the best experience possible.
