National Assisted Living Week is Celebrated at Spring Hills

September 19, 2017 | Blog

Spring Hills had a great time celebrating National Assisted Living Week (NALW). The week’s theme, Family is Forever, was inspired by a quote from the poet Maya Angelou:

“Family isn’t always blood, it’s the people in your life who want you in theirs: the ones who accept you for who you are, the ones who would do anything to see you smile and who love you no matter what.”

There were week-long activities created for each community that encompassed all that family means to everyone. Below is a snippet of some of the community’s events.

Spring Hills Morristown:
On September 15th, the senior residents at Spring Hills Morristown Assisted Living gathered in the common room for the dedication of a Spring Hills Family Tree in honor of National Assisted Living Week. Throughout the week, they created “leaves” for a community Family Tree that will hang in their common room. The leaves each have a quote each resident is inspired by. They also chose special pictures to hang on the tree. During the dedication, they talked about the importance of what was chosen and created for the tree, the importance of family as the theme of NALW is Family is Forever and take a close up look at a completed tree.

Spring Hills Middletown:
On September 16th, senior residents created exhibits of family photos for the grand finale of Spring Hills Middletown Assisted Living’s National Assisted Living Week Family is Forever celebration. Using photographs from the resident’s life as children, young adults and with their families, the senior residents shared the history of their lives with each other. The Spring Hills Middletown associates also brought in photos from their lives and childhoods. There was a photo booth to create new memories with including silly hats, bows, masks and more. Everyone enjoyed some cookies and punch throughout the social.

Spring Hills Mt. Vernon:
On September 16, a Polynesian pig roast was the theme for this Family is Forever grand Reunion finale of Spring Hills Mt. Vernon Assisted Living’s celebration of National Assisted Living Week. Tepua Hio Hio Polynesian Dance Troupe brought their special entertainment to the senior residents including an amazing Fire Poi (or Fire Knife) show, traditional Polynesian dances, conch shell blowing, and so much more. The residents participated in the dancing and were able to take photos with the performers. After the show, everyone made their way into the dining room for dinner which included a whole roasted suckling pig – apple in its mouth and all!

Spring Hills Cherry Hill:
From carnival games to a talent show to a Bake Off and carnival food, there was something for everyone at the Spring Hills Cherry Hill Family Fair in celebration of 2017 National Assisted Living Week (NALW) and its theme Family is Forever. On September 16th, senior residents joined by their families and the associates families played games like a bean bag toss, horse shoes bowling and more while getting their faces painting and jumping in a bouncy house. There was a Blue Ribbon Bake Off where five Spring Hills Managers brought in a baked good and a panel of senior residents will decide the winner. Next was a Talent Show which included Sanjay Kansupada, Spring Hills Cherry Hill Executive Director, who sang while Spring Hills resident Frank Mauri’s son Nick played the guitar. Frank himself sang as well along with many more participants. Of course the games included family themed prizes! Everyone enjoyed hot dogs, pretzels, popcorn, Kona Ice and the sounds of Caribbean music as well as a DJ.

About National Assisted Living Week:
NALW kicks off on Sunday, September 10, 2017 with Grandparents Day. If continues through Saturday, September 16, 2017. This year’s theme, Family is Forever, was inspired by a Maya Angelou quote: “Family isn’t always blood, it’s the people in your life who want you in theirs: the ones who accept you for who you are, the ones who would do anything to see you smile and who love you no matter what.” NALW was created by the National Center for Assisted Living (NCAL) in 1995 to recognize the role of assisted living in caring for America’s seniors and individuals with disabilities. The annual observance inspires assisted living communities around the country to offer a variety of events and activities to celebrate the individuals they serve, as well as to help educate members of the public about this distinct aspect of long term care.
