The residents at Spring Hills Morristown Assisted Living had a great time when they attended an annual Intergenerational Prom on Friday, May 13, 2016. 30 to 50 high school students hosted them along with more than 100 more seniors. The students danced with the seniors, served them dinner and enjoyed conversation. During dinner, the seniors were serenaded by the Morristown High School Chamber Orchestra but when dinner was done, a DJ took over and played music from the 40s to now, including the Macarena and The Twist, to get everyone up and dancing.
This Intergenerational Prom is a very popular tradition. One Prom Queen has attended for 17 years! Another woman shares that because of segregation, when she attended Morristown High School as a teenager but was not allowed to attend her prom. Now, she goes every year. Community members are part of the committee and love it. Some of them don’t even have kids who attend school in the district, they just love the Intergenerational Prom.
In its 18th year, this prom was created and run all by volunteers. The food was donated by various area businesses including the Morristown Hyatt, the Madison Hotel and Lovey’s Pizza & Grill. The students, their parents along with the Morristown High School Intergenerational Prom committee, created all of the decorations. The seniors, who are from Morristown, Morris Township and Morris Plains, all went home with a Swag Bag.
