Indoor Activities That Promote Wellness

August 13, 2019 | Blog

There are many indoor activities that can promote wellness in people of all ages, especially for seniors. As people get older, it’s important to stay active to prevent poor health. Staying active doesn’t necessarily mean working out or hitting the gym, it can be as simple as socializing with friends or even playing board games with your loved ones. Activities that promote wellness include but are not limited to activities that reduce lower extremity weaknesses, improves cognitive functions, prevent isolation and improves heart health. Let’s take a closer look at how indoor activities benefit adults.

Fitness Programs

Regular exercise can result in significant improvements to cardiovascular health, endurance, and muscle strength. It not only helps stave off diabetes and heart disease but also prevents the body from being susceptible to certain muscle and joint injuries. Exercise has a positive effect on emotional and mental health, especially for those who may suffer from depression or anxiety. Many activities that incorporate meditation also improve mental function. Here are some activities that promote physical, intellectual, and social well-being:

  • Chair exercises and stretching.
  • Yoga and Tai Chi.
  • Walking on a treadmill or outside.

Game Nights

Game nights aren’t just a fun activity, but they are also jam-packed with benefits for the health of the aging population. Games that encourage physical activity, such as Wii Sports, make great tools to help keep seniors active. A study done by Florida State University on the benefits of the Wii video game in geriatric communities found that, “(Wii) offers both social and health benefits to participants and is easy to use even for seniors with limited gaming experience.” Including Wii Sports or other physically demanding games in your game night lineup is a fun-filled way to encourage an active lifestyle for older adults.

Group Outings

It is paramount to remain engaged in the world around us by going on outings to local indoor attractions like the mall or the theatre. Not only does it provide a sense of belonging and culture, but it also allows you or a loved one to enjoy boosts to your mental and emotional states. Aging Care discussed the benefits of getting outside saying, “In addition to the physical benefits of natural sunlight and fresh air, being outside provides mental and emotional benefits.” Older adults and especially senior citizens can enjoy social interaction with new people by going on outings as well.
