Rotator cuff tears are the most common cause of disability in older adults, often occurring because our muscles become weaker as we age. Repeated use or strain on the shoulder muscles and injuries – from a fall, for example, can lead to this condition. As pain radiates down the arm from the shoulder, the arm may feel weak, making routine activities difficult, especially for elderly patients who may already be facing lessened mobility. To support seniors facing rotator cuff concerns, Spring Hills offers a holistic Rotator Cuff Home Care Wellness Program, designed to improve mobility and help home care recipients continue leading an active and independent lifestyle.
Spring Hill’s comprehensive Signature Touches Program touches on several wellness issues for seniors and reflects the holistic approach for which our communities are known, including rotator cuff tears. Our wellness teams:
Education of our clients – and their families – is a large part of this program, promoting mobility and independence; our goal is to help seniors improve their limb function so that they can continue to do things they love, like shopping, carrying their grandchildren, and participating in recreational activities.
In addition, home care recipients can and are encouraged to take part in the ongoing programs that are available at the Spring Hills assisted living facility closest to them. These programs not only include traditional community activities, but also fitness classes, art classes, culinary classes and more – some even taught by experts. While learning gourmet cooking may not be directly linked to rotator cuff rehabilitation, movements you will do in the class – kneading dough or stirring, for example – lightly work arm and shoulder muscles.
Surgery is often not necessary for rotator cuff tears in the elderly, but without proper rehabilitation, the injury is less likely to heal. Spring Hills not only understands the importance of rotator cuff rehabilitation and physical health, but that mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being is equally important to the healing process. The Rotator Cuff Wellness Program is not only focused on getting you better; it promotes quality and enjoyment of life.
