Grow Your Career: The Mentor Program

November 4, 2020 | Blog, Videos

For 16 years, the mentor program at Spring Hills has enhanced the culture in our communities. With the help of experienced associates that were willing to go the extra mile, new associates were taken under the wing of their mentor to build and develop their skills through structured training.

Importance of Guiding Associates

At Spring Hills we understand that associates need support as they make critical career discussions and work their way through key day-to-day interactions. Having access to a knowledgeable person who understands the working context and general workplace best practices, allows for associates to gain confidence in their new roles. When guidance is a benefit that’s available to associates, they may be likely to:

  • Take the time to address problems and challenges, which can help increase morale and job satisfaction.
  • Help individual associates overcome barriers to productivity.
  • Explore different strategies for coping with day-to-day issues that arise during interactions with managers, colleagues, etc.
  • Map a long-term career trajectory that keeps them attuned to the company’s needs.

The Mentor Program at Spring Hills

For 16 years, the mentor program at Spring Hills has enhanced the culture in our communities. “The creation and implementation of the mentor program was initiated as a way to help the community create a culture of support and appreciation” says Unanda Bell, VP of HR and Talent Acquisitions.  With the help of experienced associates that were willing to go the extra mile, new associates were taken under the wing of their mentor to build and develop their skills through structured training.

How does it work?

For 30 days a talented and experienced associate is paired with a brand-new hire. The associate shows them around the community, introduces them to fellow associates, acclimates them to the best practices, and conducts important competency training. This allows for the new associates to acclimate quickly to the community and allows star performers to be financially rewarded by recognizing them as leaders. Additionally, two evaluations are conducted where both the mentee and mentor evaluate the success of the training and mentor relationship.

Who can be a mentor?

A mentor is someone who has shown themselves to be strong in skills and working with the team. Many times, they have leadership qualities and have taken initiative to assist new associates even before knowing there was a reward for it.  To qualify as a mentor, an associate must be with the company for one year, have no disciplinary action, and be recommended by their supervisor and undergoes an interview conducted by the Executive Director at their respected location.

How are Mentees helped?

A mentee is a qualified new associate that works on a team. Where there is not mentor program, the supervisor at the location will conduct all the necessary training and assist the new hire with getting familiar in the community. Although the program benefits both the mentor and mentee, the program plays a crucial role in the successful on-boarding and acclimation of mentees. Having guidance from someone they can connect with and get answers from is crucial. From learning how to pick up their paycheck to providing services to a particular resident, the mentee is guided and supported throughout the training process.
