Getting to Know the Family Members in Our Care

January 14, 2020 | Blog

Making the decision to place a senior into assisted living, memory care, home care, or post-acute care can be a huge decision for all parties involved, including the family members. We understand that, with that, comes a huge importance to include the family members in our discovery process to assist us in finding out more information about their loved ones. Additionally, family members are routinely included in any tours, calls, emails, or home visits. Here are some ways that we include the family members during every step of the way of the move-in process.

Phone Calls

We understand that the family members are our best resource in understanding the individual in our care better. That is why we have a variety of phone calls with the family members to discuss the process with them. However, at the same time, we understand that family caregivers have busy lives and avoid overcalling to make sure they do not feel pressured in any way. We share the sentiment of AgingCare when they say, “Striking a careful balance is crucial when it comes to…. family involvement at a long-term care facility.” Especially during the discovery process when we are attempting to learn all that we can about the individual, understanding family dynamics can be a big part in assisting us to do that better.

Digital Communication

In today’s world, digital communication has become a huge part of any effective communication plan. According to Binus University, “Digital methods of communication are faster, more versatile, practical and streamlined.” With that in mind, our staff is well-versed in a variety of digital methods of communication including emails, Skype, and other internal trending technology systems. This helps to eliminate any errors or miscommunications during the discovery process and helps to form a successful plan of action for the future.

Obviously, it is important to go on a tour of the building prior to making a decision this big. With that being said, it is equally important to make sure that the family members are not only present but prepared with a variety of questions ahead of time to ensure the right selection is made. A reputable company will be happy to assist you with any questions you may have and ensure that you leave with a true sense of peace of mind after your tour.

WOW Moments

One of our Signature Touches to caring for your loved one is our WOW Moments. In order to learn the information necessary to pull off a successful WOW Moment and keep it a surprise for the recipient, we work closely with the family members to get to know everything we can about that resident to ensure that the moment will be truly special to them. This is just another way we include the family members in the discovery process.

At Spring Hills Senior Communities, we are proud to include the family members during every step of the journey to accepting care for their loved one. It is not uncommon for us to become an extended member of the family with unique relationships that form with everyone from the person in our care to their 5-year-old great nephew.
