It goes without saying that cancer—and the treatment of cancer—affects nearly every aspect of one’s life. In addition to the physical and emotional toll that many cancer patients face, cognitive functioning is another area of concern, especially for seniors who may already be experiencing memory loss. To support our home care seniors who currently have or have overcome cancer, the Spring Hills Home Care Service Wellness Team is pleased to offer a dedicated Oncology Program. Through this program, we offer a holistic approach to dementia and cancer care, built upon education, healthy socialization, and tailored forms of therapeutic recreation.
Every patient is different and will feel the effects of cancer differently. To help our home care recipients and their families understand the intricacies of their unique situation, our caregivers strive to be a resource, able to educate family members on what they can expect when it comes to cancer, memory loss, and additional symptoms that their loved one may face.
Through the insight of skilled caregivers, members of the Spring Hills private home care community can learn how to properly manage the effects of cancer and chemotherapy, such as:
The physical pain of cancer, combined with the fatigue that so many patients face as a result of chemotherapy, can keep even the most active of individuals from leading a life they love. However, it is important to know that physical activity can actually assist in tolerating aggressive radiation and increases the likelihood of remission.
At Spring Hills, we offer a number of physical activities that are mindful of the needs and capabilities of our residents, including those with cancer and those who are in remission. Fortunately, many of these activities are also a component of our memory care services, meaning they can help to relieve instances of memory impairment. Among these activities are tai chi and yoga, two senior-friendly practices that help to build physical strength and mobility, as well as improve cognitive functioning. In this approach to dementia and cancer care, our team can craft a tailored exercise regimen for your loved one.
