10 Tips to Maintaining Your Mental Wellness

May 14, 2019 | Blog

Reports show that 1 in 4 adults suffer from a mental health disorder. According to, disorders such as: Clinical Depression, Bipolar Disorder, Schizophrenia and OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder) are some top causes of disability in the US. While mental health conditions can lead to disability, many can live a satisfying life by working with health professionals on an individualized treatment plan. Here are some tips to help maintain your mental wellness.

Understand the Common Symptoms

    1. Excessive worrying or fear
    2. Feeling excessive sadness
    3. Extreme mood changes
    4. Avoiding friends and social activities
    5. Changes in sleeping habits
    6. Changes in eating habits
    7. Abuse of substances like alcohol or drugs
    8. Vague and ongoing “aches and pains”

Seek a Professional Opinion

Avoid self diagnosing and seek a mental health professional. Once you know what’s going on, an effective treatment can be put into place and you can move towards successful management of your mental health condition before it escalates.

Educate Yourself

The best medicine is education. By being part of the solution, you will gain better insight to mental disorder triggers such as stress, anniversary dates of losses or trauma, family friction, physical illness, alcohol or drugs, just to name a few.

One of the worst things you can do if you suffer from mental health issues is to isolate yourself. Consider getting involved in a club, volunteering or just dinning with other people. Being around friends can make you laugh or help you put things into perspective.

Exercise and Eat Right

Exercise is well known to increase endorphins, which is like taking a “happy pill” without the side affects of medication. Exercise is also known to increase your confidence and self-esteem. Consistent physical activity and eating right will elevate your mood and will also have a positive effect on your bones, muscles and organs.

Join a Support Group

Support groups are beneficial because you realize you are not alone when you are surrounded by a peer group.. It’s a good feeling to know there are people like you who have experienced the exact same feelings that you are going through. They understand you and can help by talking through coping skills to help you maintain a healthier state of mind.

Try Holistic Therapies

Don’t be discouraged if you haven’t found the right mix of treatments. Try something new! Music and horticulture therapies are some common options to find and you could be helping your condition by just enjoying something you find relaxing or pleasantly distracting.

Know Your Treatment Options

If holistic treatment options just aren’t working, talk to your healthcare professional about other treatment options. The goal is to create a wellness plan catered to your medical needs, likes, and lifestyle.

Limit Social Media

Social media can be really awesome to stay connected to family and friends, but if you find yourself comparing your life to what others show on social media, it can be very depressing. Limit your social media usage to certain times of the day and take a break from it all together when you find it’s just not bringing you joy.

Have a Good Bedtime Routine

A good night’s sleep is important for everyone to achieve. A consistent bedtime routine can help ease anxieties before bed which can cause restlessness. Consider reading as a distraction or to tire your mind or journaling to get important thoughts off your mind and onto a page. It’s also a great opportunity to pat yourself on the back to celebrate accomplishments or to write down things you appreciate or are grateful for.

When feelings of depression, anxiety, and loneliness come around, these methods allow you to fight them off in a healthy way. Modern-day healthcare companies should be expected to provide opportunities to reap the benefits of all programs available to them. At Spring Hills Senior Communities, we are proud to offer a variety of methods and healthcare professionals to help maintain mental wellness.
