This is great! What can we do first to help people we love?

Love it! How do we maintain a support system, though?

My aunt, 95 years old, has lived at Poet's Walk Fredericksburg since 2017. From the very first day she arrived, she was treated with respect and dignity. The director and staff have all been very responsive over the past 5 years, and have always sought my input and her wishes when attempting to problem solve aspects of her care. My aunt has had significant behavior issues in the past due to her level of dementia at another assisted living facility which was not equipped to handle her care. Once at Poet's Walk, she initially continued to be challenging. However, after several staff made an effort to get to know her and her likes and dislikes, her behaviors were reduced. They are experts when it comes to caring for those with advancing dementia. I can't say enough about how pleased I have been with her care at Poet's Walk. They were my last chance to find a caring, active community who accepted her for all her eccentricies and supported efforts to make sure she was happy and well cared for. Diana Marks, now the regional director, was always available to discuss concerns, and has always been very proactive in problem solving. In my opinion, she went over and above her job description to make sure my aunt's needs were met and that I felt whatever concern we discussed was addressed satsifactorally. Valerie Hopson-Bell as Family Ambassador has guided me through many turns, and truly has been a very important support system for me. The nursing staff has always quickly alerted me of any medical concerns, and kept in touch or were available for me to talk with them. They will get to know your loved one and will really get to know them and treat them with respect and dignity.

Since October 2021, I have been completing my Administrator in Training (AIT) program at the Fredericksburg location. Having over 20 years of healthcare experience, I have seen so much and struggle to put into words how wonderful this community is!! The management CARES and leads by example. The associates give their all and are so compassionate and caring. I love the team atmosphere here and each department goes above and beyond to give each resident the care and love that they are so deserving of! Absolutely wonderful place!!

Just wanted to share what a lovely place this is. Both my parents went to live here in Fall 2017. Mom had very bad dementia and Dad just couldn't take care of her anymore but we wanted to keep them together. Unfortunately, Dad passed away in April 2018 just 2 weeks shy of 96. The staff were very caring and took great care of Mom until her recent passing in Sep 2021....even through all of the covid-19 mess! Is it a perfect place? No, but I don't believe a perfect place exists. Is it one of the best? Absolutely! Bright and cheery interiors, safe outside areas, decent food, lots of activities, and a genuinely caring staff for a very difficult segment of the population. My thanks to all the caregivers who work here.

Our family was very fortunate to have had a warm and inviting residence like Poet's Walk Fredericksburg for our mother. Diana Marks, the ED, and Karen DuFort, the Wellness Director were outstanding to work with. Both understood the challenges posed by dementia residents and were willing to make accommodations for the families. In the almost 4 years Mom was with them, they worked very hard to make her feel at home and cared for. Dementia is more difficult for the families of the person impacted with the disease. You want to be able to care for your loved one but you accept that unless you hire live-in help, it is literally impossible to have your loved one in the home with you. Poet's Walk filled the void to provide a home environment and staff that understood the special requirements of the residents. They created a warm, stimulating environment while providing the care necessary for an aging population. I would recommend Poet's Walk Fredericksburg to anyone wrestling with how to cope with a parent or spouse with dementia.
